Amref Health Africa is Africas leading health NGO. Headquartered in Nairobi, we partner with communities in 35 countries to sustainably strengthen health systems and improve access to healthcare.
Africa experiences the highest rates of maternal, newborn, and child mortality of any region. Of the hundreds of thousands of women who die while pregnant or giving birth every year, two thirds live in sub-Saharan Africa. The ten countries with the worst maternal mortality rates are all in Africa. Most of these deaths are preventable when women have access to the right care and support prior to, during, and following childbirth.
Improving maternal health is at the heart of Amref Health Africas work. We aim to ensure that women across the continent can give birth safely and with dignity - to end preventable deaths across the region. Through the provision of training, support and resources to midwives, Amref works to make this vision a reality.
