Helen; “Deaf Mental Health - there are too many people who’s deaf or hard of hearing has a poor mental health, it is often caused by various communication barriers in all aspects of life including in education, at work and at home. Treatment for mental health is also impacted because of the lack of accessibility to mental health services. Signhealth works hard to make it more accessible for deaf and hard of hearing people who needs the treatment. I personally have had mental health issues including depression and I had to use a sign language interpreter to communicate with a counsellor which wasn’t an ideal situation. I would prefer to talk with a counsellor directly in our own language (British Sign Language) and I know there are many qualified BSL/Deaf counsellors. However the fundings aren’t always readily available. Signhealth is keen to remove this barrier.“
