Story
Growing up isn't easy. But it's made all the easier by having some brilliant friends making a real impact on your life - one of these such fantastic people for me was my wonderful friend Jennifer Hawes. As one of my best friends during secondary school and beyond, she was always full of sunshine and ready to support you when you needed it, make you laugh and couldn't fail to bring positivity into the lives of those around her.
This didn't just apply to her friends and family, Jenni also gave her time to the charity CHICKS, who provide week-long respite breaks for children who would otherwise not get such opportunity throughout the year. Jenni had the chance to encourage those who were suffering from poverty or abuse (physical, mental or sexual), to support orphans or children who had become full time carers. She got involved with the charity as part of her gold Duke of Edinburgh award, something we achieved together, after many a cold night in a tent! The work they did was inspiring for Jen and she had plans to return again and to continue supporting them in their worthy cause.
Sadly, Jenni didn't get the chance to go back as she died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart condition, aged 23. All who knew her couldn't ignore her constant energy, enthusiasm and willingness to try anything at least once! So I feel I can't pass up the challenge of running the infamous London Marathon, which I am doing this April in support of CHICKS - and I have no doubt whatsoever that I will be able to almost hear Jen's shouts from the crowd, right through to the end of mile 26.
I know I speak for Jen's family, her friends and of course for CHICKS when I ask you to give whatever you can in aid of this immensely practical and life-enhancing charity, one that meant a great deal to dear Jenni and therefore in turn, means something to everyone who loves her.
Thank you so much and if you want to read a little more about their work... http://www.chicks.org.uk/about-us
