Story
I’m running the 2023 London Marathon to raise money for Mae Tao Clinic.
Based in Mae Sot/ on the Thai-Myanmar border, Mae Tao Clinic provides healthcare (adult, child, reproductive health, immunisation, HIV/AIDS care, nutritional support, etc.), education (daycare centre to high school-level), protection (women, child, sexual and gender-based violence, birth registration, child safeguarding training etc.), clinical training and humanitarian assistance for displaced people living in this area and within Eastern Myanmar itself.
Dr Cynthia built this up from a makeshift clinic with few supplies in 1989 - to begin with, they provided medical care to people escaping conflict. From then, it has gradually expanded and its patient population has shifted toward migrants with their families. In recent years, there's been a big focus on “training the trainers” who can educate and empower people in those communities to manage health care needs in their communities. In recent years, per capita, they're getting less support now from the international community than they were 15 years ago, despite ongoing volatility.
This money specifically will go toward the early childhood development center. So far, Mae Tao clinic have funding for the building construction but equipment/ infrastructure and operating costs are still needed.
