On Thursday morning, 15th April 2021, Hugh passed away peacefully at Exeter Hospiscare after a short battle with cancer. His last few weeks were spent selflessly making preparations for this passing and spending cherished time with his sons and close family.

18 years ago, Hugh lost his beloved wife, Jane, to cancer at the same Hospice and has always had a strong emotional tie to the unit and the superb team who work there. He was overwhelmed when he realised that he was placed at the same Hospice and even the same room in which Jane had been. After building a lovely relationship with the nurses, he was blown away to meet a Hospiscare nurse who remembered Jane and her young boys from the first year she joined Exeter Hospiscare.

Whilst we are heartbroken at losing Hugh, we are reassured that the extraordinary team at Exeter Hospiscare afforded him exceptional care and attention in his final weeks, allowing him to be pain free and in comfort. This kind, caring, generous, intelligent and strong man with a great sense of humour and mischief will be terribly missed by everyone who had the privilege to spend time in his company.
