We reduce re-offending to change attitudes, transform lives

Story

At 9.30 am on Friday 30th September 2016, a bunch of intrepid explorers including me will gather in Grosvenor Square in Central London. Armed with just £15, we will make "a break for the border" to see how far we can get from the square in a day, to raise much needed funds for the Clink Charity.

Some people are already setting their sights as far afield as South America. For my own part, I intend to hitchhike to Northern Scotland in my waders, and not only get there but also have a salmon on the bank within the allotted 24 hours - so before 9 30 am on Saturday morning - which will be given to the Clink Events team to serve up to their own graduates.

The Clink is a prisoner rehabilitation charity, which works with soon-to-be-released prisoners and ex-offenders, to train and support them into stable roles in the catering industry. On their release, the charity supports its graduates into roles in the industry and helps them to overcome other issues faced on release. Graduates of the charity have a re-offending rate of around 12% compared to over 50% for those coming out of prison and left unsupported. The charity currently runs four restaurants within the prison walls at HMP Brixton, High Down, Cardiff and Styal (a Manchester women's prison). Further projects are in hand (at Wrexham, Durham and Edinburgh) each requiring £650,000 of upfront capital.

The charity's website is at www.theclinkcharity.org

will be very grateful, as will the Clink, for your sponsorship – thank you!

We deliver City and Guilds training to prisoners in our restaurants and gardens inside prison. They gain the qualifications and a real life work experience to make them job ready. Upon release we meet them at the gate and help them find employment and accommodation which reduces re-offending rates.
