Hi. My name is John Coutts and I was a trustee of Huish Episcopi Academy in Somerset, England and Chair of Huish Leisure, the Academy's community leisure centre. After 10 years on the Board I decided to step down on the 1st of September and was inspired to set up Huish Heroes by Year 10 student Sophie Abrahams who swam the length of the English Channel in the Leisure Centre pool. Sophie swam 1324 lengths in one go (tumble-turning every length!) to raise money to help students from Ghana visit the Academy in Somerset.

Over 50 Huish Heroes swam the Channel in the Leisure Centre pool on the 29th of August to support Sophie and the other Ghana Project fundraisers in their bid to help Ghanaian students 'See the World from a Different Perspective'.

Huish Heroes also want to help Huish students and users of the Leisure Centre also 'See the World from a Different Perspective' by buying a drone and high definition GoPro camera. Students can then make films, shot from the air, to add to their projects across the whole curriculum, including in history, geography, science, design technology and multi-media. Making films from the air will also be great for promoting and recording community events such as the Junior and Adult Triathlons organised by Huish Leisure

53 Huish Heroes signed up and are raising money which is great, but more Heroes are still needed!

Special thanks to: our celebrity guest of honour Channel Distance Swimmer Sophie Abrahams; Huish Heroes Hula Hoop Guru Natasha Howells for her sponsored Hula Hoop; all the Heroes from Huish Pool; the ex Huish student Heroes who swam in Bristol and London; Huish staff and students; Yarlington Housing Group - not just for the Heroes who have stepped forward to swim but also thanks to Yarlington for hosting a reception for the Ghanaian students when they visit Somerset; the Yorkshire Heroes who did sponsored Yoga; the Hampton Heroes; the Guernsey Heroes who swam in the sea off Guernsey and the Scottish Heroes who swam the Sound of Iona between the islands of Mull and Iona.

It's still not too late be a Huish Hero ! Please sign up at huishleisure@educ.somerset.gov.uk. If you can't swim but want to get involved don't worry - the Chair of the Academy was a Huish Hero and was sponsored not to swim! The main thing is still to hit our target of £4000 for a great cause and have fun doing it! So please think of ways you can support us and get in touch. Any money raised up to the initial target of £3000 will be split equally between the 2 parts of the project with any additional money going to further fund the students from Ghana's visit to Somerset.

We are also ran a competition for 2 free swimathon pool party tickets worth a massive £10 ($17) for the swimathon party of the year on the 29th of August at Huish Pool. The Hero who lives the greatest distance from Huish Episcopi, Somerset, England won the tickets. Our Scottish Heroes were the clear winners!

Please support all the Huish Heroes by donating whatever you can. Thank you.
