The money you sponsor will bring light into 4000 homes in villages around Karbala who currently have no access to electricity. The lighting of their homes will enable the family to:

 - Be safer in the dark

 - Avoid inhalation of diesel fumes indoors

 - Avoid burns due to naked flames

 - Allow children to study after dark.

£150 helps in fabrication and maintenance of one solar lantern in a poor rural household – less than £2 per km of the walk.

£300 pays for the installation and maintenance of one fixed solar lighting unit in a rural non-electrified household – less than £4 per km of the walk.

£600 trains 4 people to install and maintain solar panels for households in 6 months – less than £8 per km of the walk.

God willing, this December I and other members of the group shall be embarking upon an 80km walk across war-torn Iraq for three days (from Najaf to Karbala) during the time of Arbaeen.

We will be walking in the daytime, in the scorching dessert sun.   In the evenings the temperatures will plummet and the blistering cold will takeover in which time we shall rest in the makeshift tents.

‘Arbaeen’ is a religious observation that occurs 40 days after the sad day of ‘Ashura’, the commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s) the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him and a his family) and his companions.

The occasion reminds the faithful of the core message ‘Standing up against injustice and oppression in the most honourable way. ’
