Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Those of you who know me personally will know that I have a permanent colostomy after an emergency operation that saved my life in April 2016 and have had further treatment and surgery since.

For those who dont know what a colostomy is, a colostomy is an operation to divert one end of the colon (part of the bowel) through an opening in the tummy.  The opening is called a stoma. A pouch can be placed over the stoma to collect your poo (stools).  A colostomy may be needed if, as the result of an illness, injury or problem with your digestive system, you can't pass stools through your anus.

You may have a colostomy to treat:

A colostomy is often used after a section of the colon has been removed and the bowel can't be joined back together.

The past two years have been turbulent to say the least, from waking up in intensive care and seeing "Thera" for the first time.  (I named my stoma Thera after the volcano that formed Santorini, Greece." to dealing with my diagnosis and further treatments then living with a bowel which I have absolutely no control over and to make things more difficult I have a hernia sitting right behind the stoma.

However, I keep telling myself that "I am alive" and I have a superb little boy who certainly keeps me on my toes.  I am looking forwards not backwards which is the reason I have decided to run the Gateshead 10K in July 2018 for the charity "Colostomy UK" (www.colostomyuk.org)

Before I became poorly, I loved running, although mainly on a treadmill and I always fancied doing a run event for the first time ever.  Now is my time!  I would like to invite you to sponsor me in this event and not only help me through my challenge but to help raise awareness that there is life after cancer and other serious diseases.
