BUPA Great North Run 2013 · 15 September 2013 ·

Lewy body dementia is the second most common cause of age-related dementia, affecting around 130,000 people in the UK. We raise awareness of the disease, provide information to patients and carers, and fund research so that in future it can be more easily diagnosed and treated.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I first did the Great North Run in 1981, before dementia with Lewy bodies was even fully recognised as a separate condition. I last ran it in 2006, the same year the Lewy Body Society - of which I am delighted to be the President - was established.

One in six cases of dementia are of the Lewy body type, but it's still very under-diagnosed and often poorly supported. Over many years working as an Old Age Psychiatrist, I have heard lots of stories of how tough it is to cope with the challenges of dementia with Lewy bodies that include movement problems, hallucinations and difficulties with planning and doing day to day activities.

To raise awareness and vital funds that will go towards research and support tfor people affected by Lewy body dementias, I'll be pounding the tarmac again, proudly wearing the Lewy Body Society colours.

We've come a long way in understanding Lewy body dementias since my first Great North Run - but there's still a long way to go. Will you help us find out more and provide better support? Thank you.
