Story
Last summer, while mountain biking with Andy, I suffered an accident which resulted in me breaking my back in two places. Thanks to the fantastic care from the paramedics at the scene, all the staff at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, and a great deal of luck, after 8 months I have made a full recovery. Unfortunately many people I met in hospital were not so lucky, and are now living with spinal cord injuries.
There are an estimated 40,000 people in the UK living with a spinal cord injury. Every eight hours, someone’s life will change forever. Spinal cord injury affects people of all ages and backgrounds; it can happen to anyone at any time.
Back Up is for everyone affected by spinal cord injury, regardless of age, level of injury, or background, and their family members. Back Up services include mentoring, wheelchair skills training and activity courses as well as support in getting back to work or school after an injury. All the services help to build confidence and independence. Back Up receives no Government funding and relies on the generosity of its supporters as a vital source of income.
£25 could enable one spinal cord injured participant to attend a wheelchair skills course in a spinal unit, which improves his or her confidence and independence.
To raise funds for this important cause, Andy and I are going to cycle approximately 1,000 miles in two weeks, between 2nd and 15th June.
