London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·

The Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team is a totally voluntary organisation. It exists to help save lives and assist injured and distressed people in Cleveland and the Western areas of North York Moors. In the 50+ years of its existence the Team has been involved in well over 1000 incidents.

Story

I work for Johnson Matthey (JM) who offer match funding for employees of upto £1000 per year so money raised should be matched by JM as part of their charity initiative, This match funding applies to money raised by employees and will mean each pound donated is matched and Cleveland MRT get £2.  How close to the £1000 can we get?

Everyone who knows me will know I run frequently (everyday), but I have never run a marathon or a long road race. I’m used to running trails around home.  I was “lucky” enough to get a ballot place for the London Marathon, I entered not expecting to get in. When a few people asked if they could sponsor me I thought this would be an opportunity to support Cleveland Mountain Rescue who have a base in the village in which I live.

My family and I run, walk and cycle frequently in the hills covered by CMRT, and we are aware that at any time we may need their valuable services, while trying not to require them.

The Team was established in 1965 and normally have around 45 – 50 Search and Rescue Team Members (including probationers) who are on call 24-hours a day every day of the year. We also have approximately 20 Support Team members assisting all aspects of the team but especially fundraising and acting as casualties. We are all volunteers; we have no paid staff and our services are offered free to anyone who needs them. We are reliant on the generosity of local people and groups to cover the £42,000 it costs to run the Team every year.
