Bupa Great North Run 2014 · 7 September 2014 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I began this journey in January with zero fitness and distinct fear of running. My training started off with running and walking in 2 minute intervals in the dark and rain and a half marathon seemed a crazy and foolhardy ambition at the time. At the end of February somehow I’d managed to drag my way around a 5km parkrun with the next goal being a 10km race in May that I’d entered myself into to remain focussed. After completing the 10km race the next event I entered was a daunting race in June. The main objective was not to embarrass myself with all the good club and county runners and in the end I achieved a result of 1hr 38mins something I never thought I could do. My training runs continue and when I’m at a low ebb or struggling I remember the reasons why I’m putting myself through this. The Alzheimer’s Society is the leading care and research charity for people with this disease and other dementias, their families and carers. Having close family contact with this disease really strike home how difficult it is to care and support the people who suffer with this disease.

Running the Great North Run on September 7th is my way of giving something back to reward all the good work that this charity does. By the time this race starts I would have run over 500km in training. The support that my sponsors give me will make all these hours of training worth while. If you can, please donate to this good cause, however little you can afford to help keep the charity and the good work that it does going.
