Story
Honouring Four Gibbon Men, all taken too early:
Our eldest brother Henry Chapman Gibbon was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2010, only a short time after his younger brother Robert had died of the same disease in June 2008, sadly Henry passed away in 2012. Their (even) younger brother Derek was diagnosed with Kidney cancer in 1995, and given 18 months to live, sadly he also lost his battle - but not until 2013!
A few months later in same year we lost our beloved cousin Henry who fought a long battle with a rare soft tissue cancer. They all leave behind gorgeous wives, lovely children and energetic grandchildren.
All four men fought a hard and courageous battle, each with multiple surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy. We were all in wonder at how Derek persevered with treatments - amazing all his doctors with his strength of spirit. His nickname became Lazarus.
Derek's amazing courage and tenacity gave Harry, Robert and Henry extra strength when they were ill and they had much admiration and love for each other.
Our family has been blighted by this awful disease all through time and when we think of the advances made in treatments from when our Dad fought his battle in 1977, to 2000 when we lost our Mum and then to now, when our brothers and cousin fought theirs, we can definitely see huge leaps of improvement, but much more needs to be achieved.
This can only be done with continued research and brave people who are prepared to push the boundaries with their treatments.
We learn every day. We hope our contribution helps a little.
Many of the family are taking part in a sponsored cycle from John O groats to Fife in aid of Marie Curie Care in July this year. They are all cycling the gruelling 272 miles. Three brave runners (Katie, Ross and Andy) are taking on the Edinburgh marathon. So to finish off this deconstructed triathlon........
We (Isabel, Jordan and Ryan) are going to swim 250 miles in the month of May. If you can spare any pennies, please click or text GIBN54 £5 to 70070 to donate £5.00. -easy peasy lemon squeezy, as Derek would say. xxx
