We are a 24 hour search & rescue service to save lives at sea

Story

In 2013-2014, most of us met while participating in various legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Post-race, we found ourselves searching for a new challenge - what comes after sailing around the world? Thanks to a combination of innocence, masochism, and love for the sea we decided to take up endurance rowing.

As sailors, the majority of us have sailed the roughly 60 miles around the Isle of Wight at some point. Now we're going to row it on the 12th of May. Hayley, despite not being crazy enough to do the Clipper race (yet!), is also jumping in the boat.

The boat we'll be rowing on the big day is modeled on a Cornish pilot gig. It's been adapted for open water rowing. There are 8 of us on board as crew (all women) with six rowing at any time, one coxing, and one resting. We rotate position every 45 minutes (have to even out the blisters!) and anticipate completing the row in 10 - 12 hours.

We're raising money for the RNLI as a cause close to our hearts. We have seen firsthand the full power of the sea and respect the men and women who can offer assistance in desperate times. Many of us have friends and family who have volunteered. In the very early days of the RNLI, rescue boats were rowed.

We'd love it if you could show your support for the RNLI and our rowing challenge by helping us raise money for a great cause.

Rowers are:
Samantha Cook - PSP Logistics 13-14
Kate Davidson - Mission Performance 13-14
Tasha Hacker - Henri Lloyd 13-14
Ruth Cordero Obrecht - Old Pulteney 13-14
Claire Wilkinson - Great Britain 13-14
Magdalena Gawecka - Jamaica 13-14
Catherine Spencer - former Captain, England Women's Rugby
Hayley Streather - colleague of Sam

Sam, who brought us all together for this adventure, has been writing about the experience in her blog. Check it out at:

RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.
