We offer support, advice and information to UK families affected by retinoblastoma

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

At the end of August 2007 our youngest son Toby (who was four at the time), was diagnosed with life threatening cancer after doctors discovered a large tumour growing in his left eye.

As there was no way to save his eyesight, or treat the tumour without the risk of spreading the cancer, Toby underwent a major operation to remove the left eye and, at the same time, replace it with a new 'false' eye.

After a remarkably quick recovery from surgery, (which is called enucleation) Toby underwent several further tests to make sure the cancer had not spread. Thankfully, all the results came back negative.

Over the last five years, Toby has been undergoing an MRI scan twice a year to monitor the new eye and check the tumour was not regrowing. We were delighted to learn that on the fifth anniversary of his operation, in September 2012, he was officially declared to be ‘in complete remission’ and the doctors did not need to see him again.

Thankfully, he now has a normal childhood – he is healthy, active, both sporty and musical. He has 20:20 vision in his right eye, and has about 70% of a normal field of vision.

Receiving such devastating news about your own child is almost is impossible to process. In an instant, our world felt like it was falling apart. However, Toby’s spirit, strength and ability to cope and adapt throughout this unthinkable ordeal has never ceased to amaze his family and those around him.

Alison and I believe now is a great time to give something back to The Childhood Eye Cancer Trust - the charity that offered us support, information and advice when we most needed it. The money we raise will be used to help raise public awareness of retinoblastoma and support families affected by this terrible but almost unknown cancer.

Our fund raising is going really well and thanks to everyone's generosity, we have been able to increase our target to GBP6,000 which is about HK$70,000. Although we are getting close to the new target, we will continue  hard with our fund raising efforts in the final run up to the Marathon on 21 April - please dig deep and give generously.

Thank You!
