Story

2017 - Great North Run

HERE I GO AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(For some reason, it will not let me change the date for this years Great North Run 2017, so it is on Sunday September 10th 2017)

Year 11 for the Great North Run. Please see the stories below for 2015 and 2016 and if you google my name I am sure that you will find the other years on Just Giving.

I guess we are on 2017.

I am taking part in the GNR as this is my 11th year in a row and
to be honest it has become a habit now, 2/3 weeks before I realize that
my training should/could have been better, I panic, eat healthy, train
that bit more. I have always managed to get to the
finish line and raise money for charity. This year is no different.
Determination will get you there.

With regards to training, this year I have started taking Bikram Yoga classes as part of my training. Moved away from the treadmill possibly because my boys have managed to break or the head phones have stopped working (teenagers!!!!!), so running on the treadmill is boring as you soon notice that after an hour running on it you are still in the same place (at least with the music it didn't seem that bad).

Also, this year, I am not going to say what a challenging year this has been because every time I say that, the next year is even more challenging, (hopefully 2018 will be a walk in the park.isn't life meant to get easier as you get older?)

This years run, my brother is also taking part, He will no doubt race ahead and I will let the atmosphere and adrenaline carry me for the first 5 miles and then walk up hills, collecting donations and eat lots of sweets provided by the wonderful people of Newcastle and South Shields.

I am trying to raise money for the Leicester Diabetics Center.

There website is www.leicesterdiabetescentre.org.uk and are they are part of the Leicester Hospital trust www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/aboutus/leicester-hospitals-charity/

There  are around 4 million people in the UK living with Diabetes and its
estimated that this number will rise to 5 million by 2025. Diabetes is a
condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high.
Leicester Diabetic Centre try and improve the lives and care of people
with diabetes not only in Leicester but everyone in the UK and
internationally.

2015 - Great North Run

Last year I took part in the Great North Run to raise money for Leicester Hospital Charities trust (see below). This year I am doing the same. My brother Dharmesh is also taking part so I will have someone waiting for me at the finish line. (The SAAB has gone and also the SAAB smile) Please sponsor me

Wow! What a challenging year this has been so far. some of it has been good but mostly very challenging and there is still 4 months left.

For those of you that are not aware I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Thankfully I have changed my lifestyle BUT diabetes comes with other baggage. my feet are not what they used to be, depression, my eyesight is blurry, I think my brain is a bit frazzled and let's not go into the blood glucose stuff.

On Sunday September 13th, I took part in the Great North Run in Newcastle.

Right up to Friday nightI was not 100% about going. There were so many reasons not to go (Leicester vs.Aston Villa, Going on my own, not ready for the challenge of the GNR, the 400mile round trip drive in my SAAB which I have been looking to replace since last year, sort out my daughters bedroom, health reasons and personal reasons)I checked with GNR and all these reasons are not really valid to get a refund. So on Friday night I made decision to try and run it. If I failed it would not be because I did not try. I did also get inspiration from my Network Services Manager Renyk de'Vandre who recently rode across most of the coast of the UK and a runner called Tony the Fridge.

On Saturday,I started preparing, filling up the car with fuel, check the oil, getting mykit ready,(still messed that up because I forgot my new running trainers),however I could not really sleep and had about 1 hours sleep before I got upat 3am and left for 3:23am. I got to the finish lineat 6:30am and caught the Metro and bus to the start line. Seen FrankBruno who acknowledged me which really, really made my day.

Thinking about it, I don't remember much about the run itself, I remember thousands ofpeople running for their chosen charity and also the great people of Newcastle.A runner with a ghetto blaster playing, Black eyed Peas tonight's gonna be agood night and I would walk 500 miles by the proclaimers. which inspired me.Around 6 miles in I realized our location and that my car was only 500 yards away if I took a left (instead of right and up the hill) and could just jump in and drive home. It would be easier to take a left but that's not finishing 13.1miles and that's cheating, so I took the long hard route up the hill and in the end I got to the finish line with the help of the local Geordie supporters (and their endless supply of sweets).

Ifinished  and I looked for Lorus hospice but could not find it. so went tothe Kidney Research UK who I have raised money for previously. I was offered amassage but declined as the wait was over 30 minutes and I still had a 2 hourwalk to my car and a 4 hour drive home after that to look forward to. I had acoffee and hobbled to my car and took the four hour drive back to Leicester.

This was my9th Great North Run in a row, I have raised money for the charities below (thelinks are still open so if you want to donate any money to them please feelfree)

Please digdeep and help me raise money for any of these charities. you may notcurrently have any of these illnesses but you may know someone who does, soplease, please dig deep.

Lastly, am I glad I took part in Great North Run and was it worth it?

For 4 days my legs where in pain and walking was a struggle.

My feet are worse off and in constant pain.

I have the Engine Malfunction light now showing on the SAAB

I missed the Leicester vs Aston Villa match (for those of my friends who are Villa fans, this is no excuse to not sponsor me).

I am still trying to organize my daughter's bedroom.

For the first time taking part in the Great North Run there was no one waiting for meat the finish line.

On Sunday I drove for 3 hours so that I can park at the finish line and then spent 3 hours on the Metro and bus trying to get to the start line and had to stand and wait another 3 hours before the run started. 3 hours to run and then an another 2 hours walk back to my car and then 4 hours to drive back home.

So going back to the question, am I glad I took part in Great North Run and was it worth it? YES it was. for the first time this year,I have a smile on my face and every time I think about it, puts a smile on my face. It just goes to show what can be done when you try.

(Next year, my children are going to take part in the mini and junior run and my Brother will be taking part with me too.
