Story
As staff at Jack Wills we had the idea to organise a 10k race on July 1st in aid of cancer research, a charity close to our hearts. Lisa Carmichael and I are running it three legged and fancy dress!
We want to raise as much money as we can and get as many people involved as possible. This is my reason why.
When I was 12 years old I went on a school camp with my friends, I said goodbye to my family and my best friend Sarah who had been diagnosed with Leukemia for the second time in her life. When I came back from school camp, Sarah had passed away. I started organising sponsored dog walks, yard sales, bake sales and selling everything I could to raise money for Cancer Research UK. I used to sell star badges in a cardboard box to save up all the money I could to give to the charity. I managed to raise just over £2,000 and I had found a way to fight against cancer when Sarah no longer could.
I started nannying two children this year who lost their mother to cancer. One of my good friends lost her mother to cancer, another has lost their grandmother, my own grandfather survived cancer, another friend survived cancer. It just shows that there can't be one person in the world who cancer has not affected in one way or another, made you think about someone, about life and how short it is. Cancer is horrible and although survival rates and increasing, 1 in 3 is affected by cancer and to be able to give money to such a great cause is something I want to include as many people as possible in. So please, be generous, think about why we are doing this and what those suffering go through every day. The chemotherapy, the hair loss, the days and nights in hospital, the sickness, the emotional strain, the impact on their family and friends. Think about it, because I never forget it and I will never forget her x
About Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK pioneers life-saving research to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. There are more than 200 different types of cancer, and Cancer Research UK are the only charity with the knowledge and expertise to tackle them all. Unfortunately someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes but research saves lives and cancer survival rates have doubled in the last 40 years with the work of Cancer Research UK at the heart of that progress.
Cancer Research UK are entirely funded by the public and receive no government funding for their research. The money Jack Wills Edinburgh raise will have a direct impact on funding life-saving research, and help to create more tomorrows for more families.
Since the late sixties, the chances of children surviving cancer has tripled, survival rates for breast cancer have doubled and today 95% of men who are diagnosed with testicular cancer will survive. But there is still so much more to be done.
Thank you so much for your support.
