Glasgow University Shinty Club - Jack Asher Memorial Fund

Until his death in 2015, Jack Asher was the Honourary President of the University of Glasgow Shinty Club, and its greatest supporter. Jack first became involved with the club as a student in the 1950’s, where he was awarded a “Blue”. In fact, Jack was awarded a “Double Blue” by the University of Glasgow, due to his prowess on the Judo mat as well.
A serious illness curtailed Jack’s playing career, however, Jack merely swapped the caman for the whistle, and went onto become one of shinty’s most respected match officials.
The club was close to Jacks heart, and throughout the years, there wasn’t a Glasgow Uni game that didn’t receive his sage advice on the pitch, or from the sidelines. In a game to mark the centenary of the club, it was fitting that Jack would referee the proceedings.
In 2016, after an abeyance of many years, the club re-established its 6’s tournament, for past and present students, in Jacks name. On the back of three successful tournaments, we have decided to look to the future of the club, as Jack would have wanted.
We are starting the Jack Asher Memorial Fund. The club receives funding from the university, but we hope to generate more income to help the club unlocks its full potential for many years to come…and we want you to be part of it.
