2015/16 Sheffield Children's Hospital Fundraiser · 9 August 2015

We change children’s lives every day by pioneering ground-breaking medical treatment in a comfortable & engaging environment at Sheffield Children’s. All the money raised helps create a healthier future for children & young people, funding projects that are over & above the standard NHS provision.

Story

In 2014/15 we raised £6138.13 for Sheffield Children's Hospital. This has helped to transform the lives of other children as it more than pays for an entire treatment room. We are hoping to now beat that target in 2015/16 by hoping to raise £10000.

A Tribute To Sheffield Children's Hospital

A Charity fundraising Campaign Launch for The Children's Hospital Charity now in its SECOND YEAR!

Story

In 2001, Jack Scollick was born unexpectedly with Downs Syndrome and a hole in the heart. He was one of twins who had miraculously survived. No tests had picked up on Jack being DS and everyone was shocked and surprised when he arrived.
He was born at odds of 8000-1 and expected to live just 3 days. On 25th April 2015 he was 14 years old.

Jack has had a tough time with various operations to try and enable him to speak properly. All of these things, alongside speech therapy made very little difference. BBC radio 4 made two documentaries on Jack to document the life of a downs child and the effect it has on family life.

We were approached several years ago to ask our opinion on a new operation - a bone anchored hearing aid, which involves drilling a steel magnet into the skull and once healed a hearing aid is placed over it. We were told that all of Jacks test results showed he had major hearing loss (hence his speech) but that initial tests showed this could be successful. Whilst Jacks own doctors supported and encouraged this as did his parents, the NHS were reluctant to operate on a child with Downs Syndrome.

After being rejected several times, losing several appeals and with the help of our local MP, in December 2014 Jack was admitted to Sheffield Children's Hospital to have ONE ear operated on as a trial. The fantastic news - and a surprise for us - was that Jacks surgeon had supported us all the way and rather than operate once and then if successful make Jack endure another operation, he was going to do both.

The NHS funded this procedure and it appears to be allowing Jack to hear almost properly for the first time. His speech is improving daily and he understands much better as obviously he can hear. This is going to transform Jacks life and allow him to communicate properly. He can at last hear his idol Elvis Presley, sing.

NOW, the background to the launch of this ongoing campaign is that Rik Gaynor - a dear friend and award winning UK Elvis tribute artist (and jacks hero) was going to fundraise and collect money at his concerts to help fund Jacks operation. As the NHS were initially not prepared to operate (despite the sheffield surgeons pleas) we were going to launch SOMETHING - a concert, a charity day, a theatre show - SOMETHING in which we could raise the funds to finance the operation.

Jack has had his operation F.O.C. but during his stay in hospital we saw and heard from children who are not so lucky. Some, unfortunately, will not be coming home.
As a way of giving something back to this remarkable hospital we have founded A TRIBUTE TO SHEFFIELD CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL which officially launched with a gala evening and tribute show on 14th July at Real Time Live Music Venue in Chesterfield.

The hospital plays a very significant part in Jacks life, but also is of special significance to Rik Gaynor as his brother Mark was looked after and cared for at this hospital.. Mark is sadly no longer with us, but his memory lives on though the care that children like Jack receive.

We would like to keep this page as a reminder to those less fortunate than ourselves (and a lot younger) to help keep alive our local children's hospital and support the amazing work that the doctors and surgeons perform. We are the only local based fundraisers to solely support this charity.

The page is now open and it is hoped that following on from this - our founding year - we can make this THE BIGGEST and BEST local charity fundraising cause in the area - with lots more exciting events to come.

If for whatever reason you cannot attend any of our events, or if you just feel inclined to want to contribute, please do so on this page as EVERY PENNY goes directly to the hospital.
