My Dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer last year. Whilst responding well to chemotherapy, he sadly passed away in January after developing pnumonia.
Football was a common thread in our family. Growing up in South London, he was a life long Millwall fan and would often (maybe too often!) tell us the story about him getting the bus up to the old Den, watching the game and still having pocket money left for a bag of chips on his way home.
Both he and my Mum (a real football widow!) devoted so much of their evenings, weekends & summer holidays to us playing the beautiful game when we were kids. Ferrying me & my brothers around from game to game come rain or shine. I can only hope some of the football we played matched that description.
He took me to watch my professional game: Gillingham vs Spurs. Whilst I have no memory of the game, it must have made an impression on me, as I've been a Spurs fan for as long as I can remember!!
He and my Mum married in 1966. So when I had to chance to take him to the old Wembley to watch the opening game of Euro 96 (England vs Switzerland) I made sure he was kitted out in the famous red shirt worn by Bobby Moore back in 1966.
It sure seems fitting to be able to raise some money to fund research in beating this awful disease, even if Bobby Moore played for Millwalls main rivals :)
Thank you for reading. Should you wish to make a £2 donation and wear your football shirt to work, thank you very much indeed.
