Story

In 2009 my daughter Alex was born with Downs Syndrome. At that time I was living in Birmingham. Due to an NHS clerical error, Alex wasn't registered as having Downs, so no support was provided, including key medical care. This led to Alex nearly dying, and after an incredibly sour experience with Birmingham's NHS wrap around care, Alex was moved into the care of Bristol, and the Children's hospital.

After 5+ years here, Alex now has a well rounded, enjoyable and healthy life, and in part, this is due to people within the Southwest being generally more supportive and understanding with Downs Syndrome. One of the hardest things to undertake is the educational path for a child with SEN needs, and Ups & Downs offer unique support for EHCP (educational Health Care Plan) adjustments and questions, which is truly invaluable.

The reason I want to undertake this run is to raise awareness of and raise money for, Downs Syndrome, and the great work that Ups & Downs do. I am not a natural runner, so this is a big undertaking on my side, but Alex has given me the inner strength to make the most of my life in every way over the last 9 years, so I am doing it for her, my wife Sam and for anyone who has a similar situation, irrespective of the specific SEN story,

Ups & Downs Southwest is a parent-led charity seeking to support and enable children and young people, who have Down Syndrome. They aim is to ensure that these children and young people enjoy a happy, healthy, fulfilling life, in which their are able to reach their full potential. They provide direct support to families, run information & training days, youth clubs and Family Days alongside a telephone helpline and training for professionals and schools. They currently support over 400 families in the southwest.
