Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I had two major cancer surgeries last year and set myself a number of 'recovery' challenges - one of which is to complete the 100 mile Birmingham Velo cycle event on May 12th this year. I decided not to ask for sponsorship until I heard about a boy called Ruddi and Ruddi's Retreat ,a charity near Huddersfield. Ruddi was diagnosed with soft tissue cancer when he was 6 months old. After a year of intensive treatment which included 3 months of proton treatment in the USA he went into remission. Over the next few years he underwent further chemotherapy, suffered from both liver and kidney failure and developed ricketts, which detrimentally affected his bone development. All of this by the age of 6! In 2012 his mum Ali set up Ruddis Retreat, a charity based on community tea rooms near Huddersfield. With finances generated by the rooms and donations , they support three static caravans and a log cabin near Filey on the Yorkshire coast and offer respite holidays for families dealing with the trauma of a child suffering from cancer. Like me, Ruddi lost his bladder and prostate to cancer. As a 67 year old I found it a traumatic experience and difficult for those close to me .I cannot imagine how difficult that experience was for a child and his family yet somehow they have found the energy to think of helping others in the same situation. For those reasons this is a charity I want to support and will be grateful for any help you can give For more information go to www.ruddisretreat.org
