We help young children with special needs to develop through specialist intervention

Story

I’m running the Edinburgh Marathon this year to raise money for our amazing local Opportunity Centre!

Specialist Early Years Opportunity Centres are committed to promoting the overall development and life chances of young children who have disabilities, learning difficulties and complex health conditions. Unbelievably, these centres are only partially-funded by local government, and our centre has to raise more than £80k a year just to keep the lights on…

Our eldest son, Finlay, was born in 2018 profoundly deaf, severely visually impaired, and with another genetic abnormality that impacts his general development. The start of Finlay’s life has been incredibly challenging, but we have met many amazing and caring people who have helped us over the last 4 years, from Great Ormond Street to the local hospitals and community teams where we've lived… but Devizes Opportunity Centre has been a beacon of light for Finlay, and us as parents. Since attending the centre Finlay has come on tremendously; he’s learning to communicate (in his own way), interact with other children & adults, and gain confidence to explore the world around him - even taking his first steps in his new walker.

Although I have run 2 marathons before, I have never had to train from such a low level of fitness and high body weight! This is going to be a real challenge and the hardest training I’ve completed to date, but I am motivated to raise as much as I can so our Opportunity Centre can continue to help other children and their families in the years to come.
