I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 13. It was Diabetes UK (known as the British Diabetic Association back then) that supported myself and my family and helped us understand and cope with managing my condition. I am now 45 and living an active, healthy life (most of the time ;)
Unlike Type 2 Diabetes, the more severe Type 1 has no connection to obesity or lifestyle. Research suggests genetic predisposition, environmental conditions and viruses as potential triggers for the onset, but the exact cause is still unknown. Research may find a way to halt the development of Type 1 Diabetes but, to date, no intervention has successfully prevented it.
Unbelievably, the UK ranks the fifth highest in the world for the rate of children diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Each year in the UK more than 24 in every 100,000 children aged 14 and younger are diagnosed with the condition. As a Father with Type 1 diabetes this increases the risk of my children being diagnosed by another 8% - a thought that terrifies me.
About the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100
Ride 100 is like the London Marathon for cyclists. 25,000 riders will be taking part - riding the 100 miles from the Olympic Park, through London, Richmond, Kingston, up Leith Hill, Box Hill, Leatherhead, back to Kingston, Wimbledon and finishing on the Mall. I'm optimistically aiming to finish in 5.5hrs which will mean doing an average speed of about 18mph - much much faster and longer than I've ever ridden before.
Riding the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 will be the start of my
contribution to helping Diabetes UK continue their funding of pioneering
research into care, cure and prevention for all types of diabetes.
