When lockdown happened in March 2020, I found myself stuck working in a room at home and walking about 300 steps all day, gradually getting fatter and wheezier.  So I thought I’d better start taking a bit of exercise in an effort to get fit.

From those inauspicious beginnings I went quickly into full on mid-life crisis mode.  I started with the couch to 5K running regime.  I got on my bike, which had sat unused in a shed for nearly 30 years, apart from occasional trips to the park or along the Thames with my children.  I added in some swimming and rowing, the occasional triathlon, and bike trips with friends.  And on the minus side, I lost the equivalent in weight of a large Christmas turkey, which is also a plus.

For my next challenge, I am taking on the 100 mile Ride London-Essex cycle ride at the end of May, in aid of Phab.  It is the longest bike ride I have ever attempted and two short years ago I would not have dreamed of giving it a go.

Why am I supporting Phab?  For over 60 years, Phab has inspired and supported disabled and non-disabled children, young people and adults to make more of life together.  I first came across them probably 30 years ago when my Dad raised money for them, and subsequently when a charismatic fundraiser at Barons Court tube station used to sing enthusiastically while encouraging people to donate to Phab as they went past.  Their work touched me and for many years the stickers the fundraiser handed out were plastered over my filing cabinets at DB.  Phab helps break down community barriers, reducing social isolation and creating opportunities for disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy the same activities and challenges side by side.
