Jamilla is a full-size Mediterranean Miniature donkey, born March 2014, with a shoulder height of 90 cm. And although she is made of a variety of objects - from copper pipe (legs), to aluminium mesh wastepaper bins (head and neck), to suedette (skin) and a Poundland duster (mane) - she is none the less a true spirit who exemplifies the struggle to live.
St Francis first called his body ‘brother donkey’ when he hauled stones on his back to repair a ruined church.
And the Sufis liken the ‘nafs’ - a person’s ego or soul. - to a donkey. Wilful at first, the donkey/nafs must be trained until, from a capricious and wayward animal, it becomes a true and loyal friend and helpmate.
So Jamilla is my alter ego. She has, like me, the will to travel. Besides, she is both modest and helpful. In her body cavity she will carry my baggage as we walk. Together, we hope to go far.
This year, 2014, I missed my walking slot - a wheel broke and we had to do a re-think. But we'll be walking to Canterbury, hopefully in August, and Walsingham in September.
If you would like to share in our journeying, you can read about it on www.jamilla-walking.tumblr.com - and sponsor Jamilla here. After all, it’s not every day you can adopt a donkey!
