Matthew's Friends provide information and support for children and adults using Ketogenic Dietary Therapies for epilepsy, Glut1DS, and other neurological disorders.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

At the age of 2, my nephew and godson Patrick was diagnosed with Glut-1 Deficiency, a rare genetic condition that affects brain metabolism.  This creates an energy crisis in the brain and often results in seizures, movement disorders and developmental delays.  The standard care of treatment is a ketogenic diet.  This low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet causes the body to produce ketones which are used as an energy source by the brain and other tissues when glucose is limited.

Matthew’s Friends is a registered charity that specialises in ketogenic dietary therapies for medical conditions including Glut-1 Deficiency.

Through diet, Patrick’s seizures have stopped and he has made huge progress.  He does however have to miss out on any sweet treats  as well as so many other foods.  To increase awareness as well as funds, I am going sugar free in November, so no sweets, chocolate, bread, wine, fizz etc, etc for me!  I figured it’s the least I can do for my 4 year old nephew and one month for me is nothing in comparison to what Patrick misses out on.
