We spent 44 days in Summer 2015 with a critically ill Molly in St. George’s Hospital Geeneral Intensive Care Unit. (GICU).  She was on life support fighting hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis causing multiple organ failure as a complication of glandular fever.

Teams of world class medics and support staff held us all up and threw everything at Molly during 6 relentlessly harrowing weeks for our daughter and for all of her family and friends. 

We endured long times of stress, angst and sheer exhaustion when not bedside in the tired, dreary waiting room. Last year we opened a Molly's Smile funded makeover of bright seating, cheery murals and a drinks machine for this room.  There are books and magazines and a useful screen of information you need for the stay. 

The view from this room occupies a huge window onto a grim and depressing inner roof space courtyard. We have long dreamt of a holistic transformation for this dismal, draining oblong. 

Molly has smiled and somehow brought together another 'Molly powered' team of GICU staff, hospital designers and grounds staff, a former patients family and us at Molly's Smile Fund. We have a plan to build an oasis of calm and regeneration with succulent planting, rockeries, astro turf circles, stones and a glass dome centrepiece. 

Putney Art School are building sculptural ceramic pod totem poles lead by the daughter of a former patient who's outcome was a happy one. They will be a major feature in cool, calming colours, thought provoking patterns and textures for a frazzled and tired GICU community. The space will be a creative talking point to distract or a relaxing meditational vista close to very sick loved ones.  

Now we need funds to build the garden please. We want to further soften and enhance the truly harrowing and sometimes visceral experience that is life saving medicine and sometimes end of life care in this loving unit.  A room with a view would be a nerve calming welcome and enlightening addition to this amazing place. 

Molly was just 19 when she died in the unit, a year off qualifying to be a primary school teacher and at the springtime of her life. She would love to brighten lives and soften harsh moments for people in the hardest of times. Please help us to keep her smiling and share her warmth and generosity and continue her amazing legacy.
