The Dorset Blind Association is a local charity providing services, support and advice to visually impaired people throughout Dorset. Our aim is simple - to ensure that everything we do is geared towards helping to make life better for visually impaired people in Dorset.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Mike Alderson and Jason Croucher ( aka The Dorset Knobs) are attempting to swim across the English Channel, at some point between 15th - 20th June 2021, depending on sea and weather conditions.

With the obvious challenges that go with this event, we have also had to add in Covid-19. With the restrictions and lockdowns our training has had to be adapted throughout these last few months. We do all of our training down at Shore Road, Poole, with early morning and evening swims sometimes in the dark and longer swims at the weekend.

Our training now (November and onwards) will be to continue swimming in the sea (no wetsuits) through the winter (approx 5-7 degrees C), this will help with acclimatisation. In the spring, as the sea temperature begins to climb, we will be increasing our time in the water and distance to stand the best chance of completing.

This event is registered with the CSPF (Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation) and as such we will be accompanied on our boat SUVA, by an official observer to ensure that all validating criteria are followed to the letter. We will be swimming for two hours in turn, for between (optimistically) 12 and 18 hours, until we reach somewhere along the French coast.

Both of us are no spring chickens and will have a collective age of 113 when we do the challenge.
