I have always wanted to compete in an Ironman event. I was excited to see Orlando holds an annual Ironman 70.3 and in the summer of 2017 made it a personal goal to participate in the 2018 event this spring. The race will be held on April 8. Athletes and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) can coordinate for sponsored events through Team In Training to raise money. Unfortunately, the Orlando event was not on Team In Training’s calendar for 2018, but through partnership with JustGiving my training efforts can still help make a difference for LLS and make this journey a group effort rather than an individual event. Why did I partner with LLS and JustGiving?

In 2014 my mother was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). CLL is a type of cancer that starts from cells that become certain white blood cells (called lymphocytes) in the bone marrow. The cancer (leukemia) cells start in the bone marrow but then go into the blood. The diagnosis and treatment process continues to be a journey for my mother and our family. Currently she is being treated with a new medication and the medication’s positive effects are beginning to show through stabilization of the cancer cell population in her blood. Unfortunately, there are many new families affected by this disease each year and not all of them have the resources for the correct medical care. Nonetheless, the affected family members are resilient and my mother is certainly an embodiment of their determination. LLS helps to fund research to find a cure for leukemia and a small donation can assist in their effort to prevent future diagnosis of this blood cancer in family members. To date, LLS has invested more than $1 billion in research to advance therapies and save lives.
