At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

STOP PRESS

I have been training for the last 3 weeks with a slight niggle in my Achilles but was hoping that I would still be able to run tomorrow. But on Tuesday it flared up into a full blown injury and my physio has banned me from doing the race. I am devastated for two reasons - firstly because I have done 11 weeks of hard training and was really looking forward to the run. And secondly becuase of all the amazing support I have recieved from all my sponsors.

But it's not all bad news. Assuming I follow the physio's rehab programme to the letter, I am hoping to be back out running by Christmas and to be able to start training in earnest in the New Year. So I have entered the Reading half marathon on 2 March and will be running for Alzheimers again so you won't have sponsored me for nothing!

Thanks again to all of you for your donations which have far exceeded my expectations

As most of you know I am a keen runner and ran the Royal Parks half marathon last year for the first time. Most of the other participants were running on behalf of charities,  so this year I thought I would take the opportunity to run again (hopefully faster) and to raise money for Alzheimer's Society.

Dementia is becoming an increasing issue as the population is ageing. I have first hand experience of the effects of dementia in our close family and I know many of you also have relatives who are dementia sufferers. I have seen the positive impact the right diagnosis and medication can have  for both the sufferer and their carers. Alzheneimers Society fund valuable research into the cause, cure and care of dementia and rely on voluntary contributions to carry on their vital work. They also provide information and support for people with all types of dementia, their families and their carers, touhing the lives of over 30,000 people every week.

Dementia can affect anyone and is caused by diseases of the brain, one of these is Alzheimers. The other most common type is vascular dementia. There are currently over 800,000 people with dementia in the UK and this figure will rise to over 1 million by 2021. Dementia is terminal and there is no cure. One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. Alzheimer's Society supports people to live well with dementia today amd funds research to find a cure for tomorrow.
