Jay's Exomphalos Awareness · 31 January 2017

We help the babies, children and young people treated at Scotland's largest children's hospital, the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. We fund medical equipment, research, play programmes and family support services to ensure that our young patients receive the best possible care and experience.

Story

Hello and welcome to Jay and Audrey's Just Giving page! Whether you are a friend or family, have seen us on facebook or thought 'What is that cow doing in Sainsbury's?' I hope this page helps you to understand about Exomphalos (or Omphalocoele - one condition with two names) and I hope you want to help. Remember, as Tesco says - 'Every Little Helps'.

We are doing this because Audrey (who is now happy, healthy and wonderful in every way according to her mother) was born with an Exomphalos and we would like to raise a lot of awareness and a bit of money for a wonderful charity. So, "what the heck is an Exomphalos, isn't it a big animal with a trunk?" I hear you cry. Well, Exomphalos (not elephant) is when something happens during the normal development of a baby in the womb so that when they're born, their intestines (and sometimes liver and kidneys) are poking out their belly button. This requires a pretty urgent operation to pop it all back where it should be soon after birth, or (if its very large) a series of operations, dressings and procedures to ease everything back where it should be, slowly. Unfortunately this is by no means the worst of it, up to 80% of lovely "O" babies have an accompanying syndrome such as Downs Syndrome or Edwards Syndrome and 50% of them will have a serious heart problem. 31/1/17 marks Exomphalos Awareness Day, this day was set up by Mothers Of Omphaloceles (MOO) help group (please feel free to have a look at their website for more information - Omphalocele.net).

During my pregnancy we had a lot of investigations and it was a scary time for us. When Audrey was born she only required a very short operation to fix her Exomphalos and she has no other serious health concerns. We are extremely lucky. What struck us most about our experience was the wonderful staff, the fantastic support and the absolutely brilliant work being done at Glasgow Children's Hospital. Now we're trying to give something back. So, Audrey and I have decided to MOO our way through the week dressed as cows. I will also be posting videos on facebook for every few donations we receive, and taking pictures of us MOOing about town.

Thanks for your help everyone,

Love and moos

Jay and Audrey
