Three years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My oncoplastic surgeon told me that not only would I recover but that I would be running 10k races sometime in the future. As I had not run since school I told her that this would never happen.
As a result on the chemotherapy treatment I not only lost my hair, but also my finger and toe nails and all the skin on the soles of my feet. There was one week when I was in such pain that I could hardly walk.
Next I developed a peripheral neuropathy and lost the strength in my legs, I fell several times and had to be careful as I easily lost my balance when outside. My feet were so sore that I could only wear the softest of shoes.
Initially I could only walk round the garden, then I made it up the road; next step was to walk round the block. Slowly over the next two years I gained in strength, by July 2015 I could run for one minute and I could walk for an hour. I joined the Wirral Running group in August 2015 and I signed up to run in the Great Newham London 10k run. I started at the back of the group but within six months I had progressed and recently I ran 7.5k in 39 minutes.
Throughout my treatment and recovery Mothers' Union members prayed for me. I felt the power of their prayer and love and this run is my way of repaying them.
