Each week at least twelve young people in the UK die suddenly as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. At Cardiac Risk In the Young we aim to save young lives & to help those affected by the sudden cardiac death. We do this by providing support, information & screening those affected.

Story

On the 4th February 2012 something happened that changed the lives of so many people. A fit, healthy and intelligent young man died of a cardiac arrest at the age of just 17. The young man involved was a student at my College and his name was Jordan Grant.

Unfortunately I didn’t have the pleasure of teaching Jordan but he was a fantastic student in every respect.  Since his death, his parents have embarked on a fundraising effort to ensure that Jordan didn’t die in vain. I have been involved in some fundraising projects through College already including a charity 5-a-side football tournament and so far we have raised nearly £1000.

Now it is time for me to face my fears and attempt to match that amount myself.  On the 21 July 2013, I am undertaking a Sky Dive in Lancaster and my aim is to raise £1000. It costs £35 to get one young person screened for previously undiagnosed heart conditions and with this £1000, 28 people could be screened and, if necessary, be treated for heart conditions that they didn’t know they had.

Since the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) was founded in 1995 there have been more than 10,000 young sudden cardiac deaths in the UK.

It is unacceptable that 600 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die suddenly each year from previously undiagnosed heart conditions, when there is evidence to show that screening can save lives.  Such deaths are devastating for thousands of people every year, including parents, siblings, children, grandparents, friends and the local community.

This particular charity ‘The Jordan Grant Memorial Fund’ in conjunction with Cardiac Risk in the Young is a fantastic charity and I hope you will donate and much as you can to help me reach my target.
