Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
In October 2017 my then 5 year old son, George, was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. It had been a long journey to diagnosis. We knew something was wrong, but we could never work out what it was. Coeliac Disease has over 200 symptoms and takes, on average, an astonishing 13 years to diagnose. We were back and to to the GP for around 3 years with George and he had a huge range of symptoms, then I finally asked for a blood test. We then discovered that George was severely anaemic. He then had more tests and was soon diagnosed with Coeliac Disease. It was a huge shock, but the shock was mixed with relief, as we could finally get him better. He has been incredible at accepting his new gluten free diet and we are so proud of him. An extremely strict gluten free diet, avoiding any cross contamination, comes with so many challenges for anyone let alone a 6 year old, but he gets on with it and is so sensible. We think he knows that it makes him feel so much better. It is still relatively early days, but George is no longer anaemic and is like a different boy who is full of energy. His diagnosis has been life changing for all of us, but it’s been lovely to see him gradually become better. Coeliac UK is an amazing charity and we’ve sought lots of help from them already. I want to raise money to help raise awareness of this disease. There are thousands of people in the UK alone still not diagnosed. Coeliac Disease is a hugely misunderstood and serious lifelong autoimmune disease, not an allergy or intolerance and even the slightest crumb of gluten makes George very poorly and damages his body. I’d like to raise money to aid Coeliac UK’s research. My lovely best friend, Selena, will be running the race with me and raising money, too. It would be amazing if you could sponsor us. Thank you so much xx
