Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Please take a couple of minutes to read my story as to why I am raising money for this fantastic cause:

In 2002 I was in the process of planning my wedding when my father was diagnosed with metastatic malignant melanoma. It was the 3 rd time my father had been diagnosed with skin cancer but this time it was terminal.

All bookings for our wedding had been made and paid for we couldn't afford to move it forward we just had to hang on tight and pray he would be there. I was due to marry on 6th Sept 2002 which was 3 days before mam and dads 35th wedding anniversary. By August dad became really weak, his appetite reduced and he spent the majority of the day in bed. Community nurses were at our house on a daily basis and the chemotherapy had really knocked the stuffing out of him. He could barely walk but he was focussed on attending my wedding.

It was a very tiring time for all the family and mam was exhausted. It was at this stage that the community nurses arranged for hospice at home nurses to attend the house during the evening to manage my dads pain and give my mam time to recharge her batteries by grabbing a few precious hours sleep in the spare room. On one of their visits my father advised them he didn't know how he was going to cope with my wedding day and the fact that he did not want to be a burden to anyone. Hospice staff advised that someone would be in attendance on the day of the wedding to care for him.

My dad did survive to see me married. In fact he got his wish of walking me down the aisle albeit with me and my brother supporting him every step.  (This was the last time he walked). Immediately after the wedding at the reception he went to bed, he was exhausted. The hospice staff tended to him whilst we completed the formalities. Although I was disappointed my father could not join me at the top table, I was so grateful he had seen me married. My new life was just beginning whilst his was just ending. Just over 3 weeks after my wedding day my dad passed away with mam and me at his bed side. I am so grateful to the Hospice staff for the support they gave to my family and the care they provided for my father, I will never be able to place a price on it.

I hope that my story has touched your heart and that you would be so kind as to sponsor me for this event.

Thank you. Xx
