Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 28th August 2015 I lost the person who had helped build my life, my home and my family. Someone who had been a huge part of my life, having met at school and through 39 years of marriage. We had planned a long and active retirement, but that all fell apart on Christmas Eve 2014 when Nancy was diagnosed with a brain tumour. An operation was swiftly undertaken and was successful. Positive thinking and support from friends, family and medical staff helped the belief that a recovery was possible.
Tragically that was not to be the case as pathology analysis showed it to be the most aggressive type of tumour, and so followed a path towards radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Nancy was unable to cope with the pain of these treatments and despite efforts by loved ones to change her mind, she bravely decided stop treatment and live life and enjoy the rest of her time in the best way she could.
At this point the thing foremost in our thoughts was the wedding of Jenny and Shaun planned for July 2015 and after a period of slow but painful deterioration admission to the Hospice was advised. At that point it felt like a horrible acceptance that this was the end, as these places are thought of as the final resort with no further hope. How far from the truth was that. The care, dedication and determination of all the staff to make Nancy well enough to be at that ceremony was so unbelievably moving and humbling. How anyone with that level of illness and need for care could manage without the service provided in that building is unimaginable. I know without the option for me to stay overnight and just be there knowing that help was at hand kept me going.
As the months passed and Nancy had a roller coaster of a time as Doctors tried to get the right treatment balance, it got to a point where she could look forward to being at the wedding.
And so it was that on the 18th July 2015 Nancy and I sat at the top table with so may friends and relatives spread out before us to toast the wedding of Jenny and Shaun. I have no doubt that getting to that glorious day would not have been possible without access to local specialist care of that sort.
There has to be more central funding for these care providers in the future if people with life limiting illnesses are to be given hope and comfort in places that really do care. But that is not going to happen any time soon. Please may I ask that you give as much as you can in support of my efforts and know that every penny will go direct to the hospice funds.
I sincerely thank you and wish you health and happiness in your life.
Cheers,
Jerry.
