Story

So i've decided to do the Great North Run for the 3rd time going and again, i'm doing it for Diabetes UK. Here's a little back story as to why i want to raise as much recognition and money all for this amazing cause:

Luca is the most amazing lil boy and an even better cousin, please read his story and why Diabetes UK needs all the support possible!

Luca is 8 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just before his 4th birthday. He currently wears an insulin pump to deliver insulin that his own body can’t produce anymore. He has a constant supply of insulin every hour and then must also be given fast acting insulin every time he eats.
With diabetes there are also two great risks:
Hypoglycaemia – Luca must have treatment for this in the form of a sugary drink otherwise it would lead to a severe hypo becoming unconscious and potentially a diabetic coma.
Hyperglycaemia – If treatment to bring blood sugar levels down doesn’t work ketones can develop and Luca could go into diabetic ketoacidosis which is a life threatening emergency as the ketones are poisonous chemicals which become acidic.
To keep Luca well he has many finger pricks through the day and also through the night. Luca is woken at 11pm and 3am for tests by his parents (and regularly needs more tests through the night if high or low). Whilst Luca rarely complains about his diabetes and he is very good dealing with it, the thing that upsets him most is when he is regularly interrupted whilst playing to have a test and if he is hypo he has to sit down for 15 minutes for his treatment while his friends are still playing. It also means Luca doesn’t get invited to his friend’s houses for tea or day trips out (away from his family) as the parents are too scared to look after him.

Diabetes is a life threading and a constant daily battle to manage and Luca struggles on a daily basis so i want to raise as much recognition and money for this fab charity as possible.

Know Diabetes. Fight Diabetes.
