Story
Thanks so much to everyone for their sponsorship. I completed the marathon in 4 hours 27 minutes and had a brilliant day. My mum came up to Inverness to support me and I am very grateful to her.
It's not too late to sponsor me - to find out why I did this, keep reading.
In April 2009 cancer came into our lives. Nick's dad, Stuart, had been ill for 6 months, getting progressively worse and we didn't know what was causing it. And then, we got the phone call - it was cancer. I was 37 weeks pregnant, and on maternity leave. We were driving back from the cinema when we heard the news and just cried all the way home.
At the time, we weren't sure how long Stuart would have and whether he would live long enough to know our new baby- the statistics did not look good for a man in his condition, with his symptoms. But we have been very lucky - he has survived 2 bouts of chemotherapy, put weight back on and is now living with cancer rather than dying from it. And he is getting to know his newest grandchild - Charlie.
People have asked me - why run a marathon? - surely there are other ways to raise money that hurt less and are easier? My answer is this: - it is not easy living with cancer. For any of us but particularly Stuart, Fiona and of course Nick and his sister Sue. My training schedule has been 16 weeks which is less time than Stuart has recently spent undergoing his latest round of chemotherapy. If he can fight cancer, the least I can do is run a marathon and raise as much money as I can for Macmillan Cancer Support.
