Joan Short, age 91, of West Roxbury, Massachusetts, formerly of Culpeper, Virginia, died on Saturday, March 1, 2014. Joan was born July 9, 1922 in Leeds, England, daughter of John and Margaret (Riley) Short. Joan grew up in the north of England and completed her training as a nurse at Ancoats Hospital, Manchester, England. Joan served as a nurse before, during, and after WWII. She married Dr. Grahame Henson on July 9, 1945. Joan and her former husband and two older children moved to the United States in 1957. They lived in Charlottesville, Virginia until 1960 when they moved to Culpeper, Virginia. There they had two more children. Joan lived in Culpeper until 1996. She then lived with her daughters and their families in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and West Roxbury, Massachusetts until her death. She was predeceased by her former spouse, Dr. Graham Henson. Joan is survived by her son Geoffrey Henson and his wife, Lucy Henson of Alpharetta, Georgia, the Honorable Rosalind H. Miller of West Roxbury, Massachusetts, Christine Messick and her husband, Jeffrey Messick of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Adrian Henson of Charlottesville, Virginia. Joan is also survived by twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Culpeper, Virginia.
