Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Joe unexpectedly died in his sleep on the 29th July 2017. Joe was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 6. He was on medication until he was 10 years old. Until last year, epilepsy hadn't affected him. Tragically, at the age of 19 epilepsy took his life.

Throughout Joe's life, he was compassionate for those less fortunate, the homeless in particular. He would always try to do the small things to improve the lives of homeless people at home and in Leeds.

Joe described his first year at Leeds University as the best year of his life. However, during this year, he would regularly mention to us that witnessing the extreme poverty and homelessness in Leeds had troubled him. This had driven him to help the homeless in whatever way he could. He aimed to volunteer for a homeless charity in Leeds in his second year at Uni.

For this reason, we have decided to set up this page, on his behalf in order to assist the cause that he had planned to help. All donations on this page will go to the St Georges Crypt, that aims to meet the basic needs of those are living on the streets in Leeds. It provides food and a place to stay for the most vulnerable in the city. The family has specifically requested that the proceeds will go towards the provision of meals at their Centre.

As a family, we will also be donating to Epilepsy Action as we feel that people aren't educated enough about the condition, its effects and impact on those with epilepsy and their families. If you would prefer to donate to this cause, the website is https://www.epilepsy.org.uk/

Thank You,

Tilly Bertram (Joe's sister) and Joe's family x
