Event: Vierdaagse Nijmegen Marches, 16 Jul 2019 to 19 Jul 2019
359 Bexleyheath Air Training Corps Squadron is located within the London Borough of Bexley. We are an RAF Air Cadet Unit, with a team of 7 cadets taking part in the 2019 Vierdaagse Nijmegen March this July. The event requires our cadets to march a total distance of 100 miles (160 km) over four days, equating to 25 miles (40.2 km) a day.
Sergeant Joe Sawyer is in charge of organising the cadets to march with the Kent Wing Nijmegen teams. In preparation for the event, cadets must complete a rigorous training program requiring them to cover a total distance of 276 miles (444 km) over six months in the run up to the event. Marching this distance with cadets as young as 13 years of age is both a mentally and physically demanding challenge, which requires a lot of determination and commitment from all those involved.
As a squadron we have decided to raise money for the charity 'Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis' as in the summer of 2012, Sergeant Joe Sawyer's mum was sadly diagnosed with this disease. Multiple sclerosis is a condition which damages the sheaths of the nerves’ cells in the brain and the spinal cord. In recent years it has spread across her body causing her memory to deteriorate significantly and she has now started to lose her ability to walk. The squadron is committed to this fundraising event as they feel they would like to help more people like Joe's mum suffering from this terrible and debilitating disease.
