Since you are here, you will hopefully be aware that I am going to be attempting to set a Guinness World Record for travelling from John O'Groats to Land's End by pedal powered Go-Kart!!

My motivation for attempting this challenge is again to raise money for SHINE (Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Information Networking Equality_ as Aurelia was born with Hydrocephalus, although not diagnose until she was 4 months old.

This is a very little known charity in the grand scheme of things and as such people who could benefit from their wealth of knowledge often miss out.  As the majority of sufferers are diagnosed in utero  it is vital that new parents are given as much information as possible in light of diagnosis.  Our own experience showed it is easy to be given a diagnosis by paediatricians but they could not explain to us what the future held for Aurelia; would she walk and talk, would she be able to lead a normal life.....and asking Dr Google was probably one of the worst decisions of my life.

This is where SHINE stepped in, providing us with detailed information about surgery options, steps you can take to help post operatively to aid recovery and things to expect as your child gets older.  All this meant that when we did meet Aurelia's surgeon we actually felt prepared to make an informed decision about brain surgery (in brain surgery terms a shunt is the surgeon's bread and butter)!

These resources and the on-going support available through SHINE have proved invaluable to us, so I feel I really need to continue to do my part to help raise awareness.
