John's Memory Mile Swim

Memory Mile Swim · 8 September 2019
I am undertaking to swim a mile on 8 September to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society to make a contribution in the fight against dementia This is a subject close to my heart as I was treasurer and trustee of the Alzheimer’s Society for seven years and for the last three years I have been an elected director of Alzheimer’s Disease International which is the organisation that coordinates the national associations around the world
With someone developing dementia every three minutes, dementia is set to be the UK’s biggest killer, affecting all our futures. It doesn’t discriminate, it devastates lives, and right now, there is no cure. The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. They provide information and support, fund research and are creating a more dementia-friendly society so people with the condition can live without fear and prejudice.
A mile may not sound like a long way to swim for some... but for me (at my age!) it is a very long way. Over the last few months, I have progressed from being able to swim only a few lengths at a time to being able to do 1/2 mile. As I write this with 3 months until the ‘big swim’ I realise that I have got to put in some serious training in order to complete the mile!.. so I have enlisted the help of a personal trainer, Tom White, of WhiteWay Fitness to guide me through this process.
I will be posting regular updates over the next three months for you to see how I am getting on with training!
Please support me in this swim to help raise money for a fantastic cause.
