SICKLE CELL SOCIETY

Run largely by volunteers from all walks of life; i.e. from Doctors to Administrators, this organisation provides education to health carers, relevant professionals, and of course patient's families about the sickle-cell anaemia condition. Amongst other services they provide are nationwide sickle cell centres with support groups, research and development efforts, provision of welfare support, care in the community, financial benefit / entitlement & claim support, specialized childrens units / groups, educational projects, publishing of informative magazines and leaflets etc...

The Society draws funding support nationally from a wide range of organisations such as the Department of Health, Community Fund, Lloyds TSB Foundation, PPP Healthcare Medical Trust, Glaxosmithkline who all recognise their contributions. It also relies heavilly on donations via fund-raising activities and events organised by the general public as part of its life support.

WHY AM I RUNNING TO SPONSOR SICKLE CELL

As a college student; a role model of mine at the age of 26 years passed away. Kenny was a high achiever; already a practicing doctor this was a sad loss of life. Like many others of Tropical regions and Sub-Sahara African origin where malaria is common, he suffered from the Sickled cell blood disorder. The condition can lead to complications and those with the disease may be hospitalised for weeks at a time. This often serves to cause great disruption to their lives. I have had exposure to this first hand.

Having returned to some level of fitness after a severe knee injury and having discovered a lower risk sport like running, it only made sense to do something I enjoyed so much for a charitable cause rather than just for the pure pleasure. Having researched a few organisations I have chosen to dedicate proceeds of your funds to this charity because of the contributions they make to society.

Please give kindly and I will attempt to cross the line in a very respectable time on the day.

Thanks you in advance,

John
