London-Normandy cycle · 6 June 2014

We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

We are riding from London to Pont l'Eveque from June 6-8, 2014.  Day 1 entails a trip over the Downs from London to Dover, and then after a short ferry ride to Calais we will cycle the remaining 25 miles of the day to Boulogne.  On day 2 we will travel through the Sommes region as we head from Boulogne to Neufchâtel-en-bray.  On Day 3, we depart Neufchâtel-en-bray and head west towards Pont l'eveque, including a sharp climb over the Pont de Normandie.  In total, we will travel over 260 miles in 3 days (to put this in context John had never cycled more than 10 miles in a single ride before this month, Lawrence has barely sat on his bike in the last 6 months, and while Hugh is a more experienced cyclist he has semi-retired from cycling since moving to Kent last summer).

We are riding in memory of two people who we lost to cancer in 2013.

One of John's closest school friends, Glen Findlay (18/07/83 - 17/05/13), lost his four year battle with a brain tumour on May 17. He was an inspiration throughout his battle, and we want to help people who find themselves in his situation.

Lawrence's mum Viv Avery (23/05/51 - 17/04/13) also sadly died of cancer in April.  After beating cancer twice before, unfortunately she was unable to defeat it a third time.

Because of our losses, cancer research is a charity extremely close to our hearts and we would be extremely grateful for any support you could provide.  As we crawl slowly up the hills of northern france, we will try and summon some of the courage Glen and Viv showed in their battles to get us to the finish line.
