Story

Thanks for coming to look at our page. John Workman and Tim Williams are getting back on their bikes for the Footprints Foundation between 2-7 July 2019.

The Footprints Foundation supports the Khaya Centre and its network of orphanages near Johannesburg providing day care, education, clothing, food and medical help to young children - many of whom lost their parents to AIDS or have been abandoned by their families. Indeed the Centre and its network are providing the only daily meal many of these children get...

So, following on from the ride to Sanitago de Compostela in 2016, John and Tim have picked something equally - if not more - challenging.

Over 5 days, John and Tim will take on FIVE Tour de France climbs in the French Alps - including the iconic Mont Ventoux - (only the third highest point on the ride) and 4 others - including Alpe de'Huez - topping out at a mere 9000 feet. They will cover a total distance of 392 miles (or the distance from London to Edinburgh) and climb 8848 metres (or two and half times the height of Everest...).

John and Tim have nicknamed the challenge "Project Hannibal" - because getting a large animal up the Alps is what John is doing - and it is the Hannibal 100 year challenge because John is in his 60th year and Tim is 40...

This isn't the first time BPE has supported the Footprints Foundation - in October 2011 a group of BPE colleagues travelled to South Africa to help refurbish the Zenzeleni Orphanage. Since then John has been an unskilled labourer, painter and brick-catcher (don't ask...) on 2 occasions. John is going out to Johannesburg again this October to work on one of the project teams.

There is no fixed target for fundraising - as much as possible is what this very worthy cause needs. So we need your support - please please dig deep and help us raise money for these kids.

Many thanks.

About the charity

The Footprints Foundation aims to tackle the problems and issues facing disadvantaged and vulnerable young and elderly people, and those people with significant health issues. We aim to support these people during the most trying periods of their lives and help give them the strength and confidence to enjoy a fulfilled life. Our aim is to support through volunteering and hands on help rather than solely providing financial support.
