Virtual Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2021 · 29 May 2021 to 30 May 2021 ·

Family members try and do all they can to support someone with an alcohol or drug problem. There are many people in Scotland who are doing this on their own and in silence. Your donations will help us to continue our work supporting families across Scotland.

Story

I am running the Edinburgh Marathon in May and a 100km Ultra Marathon in June this year for a national charity called "Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs".

These guy's are amazing. They support anyone concerned about a loved ones alcohol or drug usage. They give information and advice to people and help them with confidence, communication, general wellbeing, and put them in contact with local support. They also help people recognise and understand the importance of looking after themselves.

Those of you that know me well will know that I have had my own battles with addiction over the years. The truth - certainly in my own experience - is that it was the loved ones around me who suffered more than I did. The thick fog that comes with addiction blinded me to the path of destruction that I was leaving behind me, but they saw and felt it all.

I'm extremely grateful to say that with the help from some amazing people that I am on the right path.

This will be my 2nd Edinburgh marathon. I ran my first one back in 2017, but in true "Johnny style" I went out for a drink the night before, one thing led to another and I ended up drinking in a nightclub until 4am. I somehow completed the marathon the following morning but I knew I had let myself down.

The Ultra marathon is more of an experiment. The aim is to push myself to my limits and prove that I am capable of so much more than I thought possible.
