The Race
In August of this year I will be competing in the inaugural Addidas Terrex Expedition Length Adventure Race, in a mixed team of 4.
This will traverse 400km of the Lake District's fells, mountains, lakes and rivers, on foot, mountain bike and in tandem kayaks. The clock won't stop for the duration of the event so we will race through the night on minimal sleep and will tackle additional challenges like gorge scrambling, whitewater swimming, rope ascents and abseils along the route.
The race is unsupported so we will have to provide and manage food and drink supplies at transitions between stages and ensure that we keep hydrated and fueled to reach the finish. Medical and logistical issues will be resolved within and by the team to remain in contention, we will have to be self sufficient throughout or risk disqualification.
Training has gone well to date with many early Sunday runs and rides, we have crossed Striding Edge at 2.00am on a clear star studded night and frozen through 90km of mountain biking in the frost of the Peak District in March, mentally I have been working towards this for 10 years and feel ready for it.
The event is attracting international teams as it ranks as a qualifier for the World Championship series and will receive TV coverage later in the year.
The Charity
Last year a young girl of 14 on our estate tragically lost her life due to ill health linked to cystic fibrosis. The estate is a fairly close knit community with many young families whose children play together, and as such the loss was all the more poignant. Her older brother also suffers with the disease and faced with this last year I felt compelled to dedicate any funds raised to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in memoriam. The family concerned are not aware that I am raising funds for the charity and I won't let them know until after the event.
Please give what you can, and thank you for taking the time to visit and donate.
